The Difference Between Microdermabrasion And Dermabrasion

Microdermabrasion, which is sometimes called a power-peel is comparable to a softened sandblasting. It involves tiny crystals, which are sprayed on the skin, and is most effective on fine lines, dull skin, brown spots and surface acne scars.

Dermabrasion, which is performed by both dermatologists and plastic surgeons, and is also known as surgical skin planing, is a procedure in which the skin is frozen and then a specialized instrument is used to gently abrade skin. This abrasive action actually improves skin when a new layer of smoother skin replaces the old treated skin.

Uses of Dermabrasion vs. Microdermabrasion

Dermabrasion was developed to smooth acne scars, pox marks and scars. It is now also used to treat tattoo scars, wrinkles, age spots and other skin lesions. Dermabrasion is not effective in treating congenital skin defects moles, pigmented birthmarks or scars from burns.

Microdermabrasion is effective on superficial skin problems and works on all skin types and colors; causing no change in skin or scars. It is not effective for scars, stretch marks, keloids or deep acne scars.

Dermabrasion & Microdermabrasion Treatment

Dermabrasion

During your pre-dermabrasion consultation, your dermatologist or plastic surgeon will describe the type of anesthesia that will be used, the actual procedure and what your results should be expected. He or she will explain any risks and complications that may occur. Photographs will probably be taken before and after surgery to evaluate your improvement. You will also receive preoperative and postoperative instructions.

Dermabrasion is performed either in the surgeon's office or in an outpatient surgical facility. You may be given some medication before your procedure to relax you. The affected area will be thoroughly cleansed; then your doctor will apply a special spray that freezes the skin. A high-speed rotary instrument with an abrasive wheel or brush is used to remove the outer layers of the skin and improve any irregularities in the skin surface.

After dermabrasion, your skin will feel as though it has been severely "brush-burned" for a few days. However, your doctor will prescribe medications to reduce any pain that you may experience.

The newly formed skin will be pink at first, but will gradually (four to six weeks) develop its normal color. Makeup can be used to somewhat mask the pinkness as soon as the skin is healed. Most people can resume their normal activities in seven to 14 days following dermabrasion. You will be instructed to avoid unnecessary sunlight for at least three to six months and to use sunscreen on a regular basis when outdoors.

Side effects of dermabrasion include:

• Uneven changes in skin color, which may be temporary or permanent
• Scar formation
• Infection
• Darkening of the skin caused by sun exposure in the days and months following the procedure.

Following dermabrasion:

• Do not drink alcohol for 48 hours
• Do not take aspirin or ibuprofen for one week after your procedure
• Avoid smoking (which you shouldn’t do anyhow)
• Attend any follow-up appointments

Microdermabrasion

If you will be having microdermabrasion, you will also receive information about the procedure as well as pre-procedure and post-procedure instructions. With microdermabrasion, no anesthesia is used and there are almost no risks.

In microdermabrasion, tiny crystals are sprayed onto the skin in a gentle abrasion technique that removes the dead outer layer of skin. Microdermabrasion is an exfoliation and skin rejuvenation procedure, wherein age spots and fine lines will be erased or diminished, creating softer, smoother skin.

Following microdermabrasion, your skin will be pink and feel dry and tight, like a sunburn, for a day or two. Applying an unscented moisturizer will help ease any discomfort.

The main side effect of microdermabrasion is eye irritation if any crystals get into your eyes.

Following microdermabrasion:

• Use moisturizers and sunscreens (which you should do anyhow)
• Avoid sun exposure for a few days following the procedure
