A skin biopsy is a procedure where plastic surgeons removes a small sample of skin to have it tested to help diagnose diseases such as skin cancer, infection and other skin disorders.

There are several types of skin biopsy:

• Shave Biopsy - A thin layer is taken from the top of a lesion

• Punch Biopsy - An instrument called a punch is used to remove a cylindrical section through all layers of the lesion

• Excisional Biopsy - A scalpel is used to remove the entire lesion and is used for smaller lesions

• Incisional Biopsy - A scalpel is used to remove a small sample from a large lesion
