Plastic Surgeons
Most plastic surgeons in the United States perform both reconstructive and cosmetic plastic surgery. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is the largest plastic surgery specialty organization in the world. Plastic surgeons have over six years of surgical training and experience, with at least three years specifically in plastic surgery. This intensive training makes them qualified to perform either cosmetic or reconstructive procedures.
Reconstructive Plastic Surgery
Reconstructive plastic surgery is performed on abnormal structures that can appear on almost any area of the body. These can be caused by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, infection, trauma, disease or tumors. Plastic surgeons perform this type of surgery to improve bodily functions, and/or to approximate a more normal appearance. Some common types of reconstructive operations that plastic surgeons perform include:
Cleft-lip, cleft-palate repair – This separation of the upper lip and/or roof of the mouth occurs early in the development of a fetus. Plastic surgery to repair this developmental defect restores the ability to eat, drink and speak normally and creates a far more normal appearance.
Hand surgery – The reconstruction of hands that are deformed by congenital or developmental abnormalities or by trauma or disease can be performed by either plastic surgeons or specially trained orthopaedic hand surgeons. Hand surgeons treat radial or ulnar clubhand, simple or complex syndactyly, polydactyl, and overgrowth or undergrowth of digits in children and carpal tunnel syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis and Dupuytren’s contracture in adults.
Breast reconstruction and breast reduction – Following mastectomy for breast cancer, breast reconstruction to restore the breast’s normal appearance can be achieved by plastic surgery. Breast reduction surgery removes excess breast fat, glandular tissue and skin to alleviate the discomfort associated with overly large breasts.
Skin cancer treatment - Undergoing surgery for skin cancer may result in unsightly disfigurement. A plastic surgeon can surgically remove cancerous and pre-cancerous lesions, normally without causing a great deal of scarring.
Cosmetic Plastic Surgery
Some common types of cosmetic plastic surgery are:
Rhytidectomy - This plastic surgery, commonly called a facelift, is used to improve visible signs of aging of the face and neck, in both women and men.
Injectable fillers are used to enhance shallow contours, plump thin lips and soften facial creases and wrinkles. They can also be used to improve the appearance of deep scars.
Blepharoplasty – Eyelid surgery, known medically as blepharoplasty, removes sagging skin from the upper and/or lower eyelids, giving a more youthful, alert and rested appearance.
Rhinoplasty – This surgery is known commonly as a “nose job”. A plastic surgeon performs this operation to enhance the appearance of a person’s face, often improving one’s self confidence. Rhinoplasty may also be performed to correct impaired breathing caused by structural problems within the nose. This can reduce or eliminate sleep apnea and snoring.
Abdominoplasty – This plastic surgery procedure is commonly known as a “tummy tuck” and often takes place in both women and men after major weight loss and/or liposuction. This operation removes excess fat and skin and restores weakened or separated muscles, creating an abdomen that is significantly firmer than pre-surgical.
Augmentation mammaplasty - This operation is also called breast augmentation. It is a surgical procedure that involves using saline-filled implants to increase the size of the breasts or to restore breast volume lost after weight loss or pregnancy.
Dermabrasion - Dermabrasion and dermaplaning help to smooth the skin's top layers by controlled surgical scraping. Dermabrasion is usually used to improve the look of facial skin left scarred by previous surgery or accidents or to smooth out fine facial wrinkles. It is also used to remove pre-cancerous growths and to treat serious acne scars.
