Skin Resurfacing
One of the more popular laser skin procedures in the process of skin resurfacing. Skin Resurfacing has come to be known as an “anti-aging” because it helps eliminate wrinkles, but it has other uses as well. The procedure can be used for removing scars and discolored areas of the skin. Like skin tightening procedure, it can also target precise areas on the face like the skin around the eyes or mouth.
How Skin Resurfacing Works
Prior to the advent of laser skin treatments, the only ways to deal with unsightly wrinkles and skin discoloration was to get chemical peels and dermabrasion. The goal of using lasers to treat these conditions without removing or damaging the upper layers of skin (microdermabrasion).
About the Skin Resurfacing Procedure
You don’t necessarily have to go to a surgery center to have the procedure done, which many patients are relieved to discover. Skin resurfacing can oftentimes be done right in the doctor’s office, assuming they have the equipment to work with. It’s common to receive anesthesia or intravenous sedation while undergoing the process.
The procedure can take anywhere between a few minutes and a couple of ours, depending on how much work you want done. The laser will penetrate the outer skin layers and uncover layers not affected by previous damage. Once the undamaged skin is uncovered, new skin can begin to grow that does not share the imperfections that the old layers did. One procedure is usually enough to fix any issues, but in the case of deep scarring, two or more sessions may be required.
Laser Skin Resurfacing is Not Always the Solution
While very effective in reducing wrinkles, discolored skin, or tissue scarring, laser skin resurfacing is not always the best option. In fact, not everyone is even a candidate for the procedure. Individuals with olive or black skin may experience discoloration of the skin that can last up to 8 months. Also, those with any kinds of skin disorders are probably not good candidates for skin resurfacing, though cases do vary. It’s a good idea to speak with your dermatologist before getting the procedure done.
Skin Resurfacing Prices
As is true for any medical practice that is effective, laser skin resurfacing can be costly. On average, the fee for ablative skin surfacing is slightly above $2,000, and non-ablative skin surfacing is a little over $1,300.
