Hirsutism & Laser Hair Removal Facts
The idea of removing unwanted hair is not a new one. In fact many methods for achieving this have been developed since the beginning of medical treatment, including depilatory creams, Brazilian waxing, Intense Pulse Light treatment (IPL), sugaring and shaving.
For those with regular hair growth, sometimes the older and more conventional methods are enough. But when faced with overly excessive hair, or the symptoms of hirsutism, a more permanent solution is ideal. For this, the newest method, and arguably most effective in terms of long term elimination, is laser hair removal.
What is Hirsutism?
Hirsutism is a condition or side effect for which excessive hair growth occurs on the face, back, chest arms or legs. It can occur in both men and women, but is usually only considered a problem cosmetically for the later group. The hair that grows is usually dark and thick, and reoccurs continuously.
What many people don’t know, however, is that hirsutism is not a disease in and of itself, but rather a symptom. The increased hair growth could actually be a sign of a more serious medical condition.
Causes of Hirsutism
There are many causes for this condition.
• Studies have shown that hirsutism can in some cases be caused by a sudden increase in male hormones (androgens).
• Cushing’s disease has been documented as having caused excess hair growth
• Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
• Medications that affect hormones, such as birth control, can trigger hair growth
• Hair follicles that are overly sensitive to male hormones
• It’s also beginning to be believed (though not definitely proven) that excessively high levels of insulin in women tend to result in an increase of hair growth. This correlation has been noted in obese women, because they are at higher risk for developing diabetes and insulin resistance and similarly at high risk for developing hirsutism. Also, in some cases, receiving treatments that regulate insulin levels have also decreased excessive hair growth, and therefore a relation between the two disorders is likely.
Additional causes for hirsutism can include tumors or cancerous growths on the ovaries, cancer of the adrenal gland, congenial adrenal hyperplasia, hyperthecosis and anabolic steroids. If you suspect you have hirsutism, you need to speak with a doctor about the possibility of having one of these more serious conditions so as to begin treatment early and avoid complications.
Treatment for Hirsutism
Many women with excessive hair opt for treatment to remove it. Shaving and waxing are temporary solutions. Laser hair removal is by far the most efficient method for removing unwanted hair, though it may take several treatments before the hair elimination is permanent. However, as noted above there are some causes of excessive hair that may be more serious than cosmetic concerns.
Do I have Hirsutism?
It’s important to note that not all excessive hair constitutes a case of hirsutism. Some woman can develop hair on their upper lip or chin during puberty, but this is not necessarily abnormal. You need to speak with a doctor to actually determine if you have the growth disorder.
