Laser Hair Removal Vs. Electrolysis

Laser hair removal and electrolysis are the only permanent ways to remove unwanted hair from your face or body. But which is more effective? This question has been up for debate since the development of laser hair removal in the mid to late 90’s. It is our goal to finally put this argument to rest through the contents of this article.

What is Electrolysis?

The form of electrolysis that we are referring to in this article has to do with using electric current through a needle-shaped electrode to destroy hair follicles with the intent of preventing hair from re-growing in the treated area. This is an important distinction because electrolysis has other uses. The process was first used successfully as a hair removal technique by Dr. Charles E. Michael in 1875. However, it wasn’t until the 1970’s that the equipment used in the procedure became much more accurate and effective.

What is Laser Hair Removal?

This procedure uses laser lights to destroy hair follicles without damaging the skin. It works by targeting dark pigments in the hair called melanin, and passes safely through the skin. This idea originated in the 1960’s, but didn’t become practical in its application until the invention of the “Q-switch”. This device acts similarly to the shutter in a camera and helps control the laser, emitting it in pulses rather than a single beam. Often used to treat excessive hair or hirsutism.

Dispelling Common Myths

The best way to address this argument is to first get out of the way the connotations that each procedure has and dispel a few myths.

For some people, laser hair removal may have some negative connotations because of its advertising history. When the procedure made its debut in 1969, it was rushed into production and widely distributed before proper testing was completed. It proved to be somewhat painful (despite the procedures claim to be completely painless) and generally panned as ineffective. However, many breakthroughs have been made in modern laser hair removal that allow it to live up to its name.

A common myth about electrolysis is that it is painless. While the procedure isn’t terribly painful, it can cause does have a track record for being uncomfortable and annoying and therefore the claim that it is painless is false.

It’s also a common myth that the procedures for electrolysis and laser hair removal are enemies. In fact the opposite is true. They are often used in conjunction over time to permanently remove unwanted hair. Having stated this, you can count on the rest of this article to be unbiased, since a utilization of both techniques tends to be ideal.

Electrolysis vs. Laser Hair Removal

What it does

Electrolysis : Electrolysis works on both light and dark hair. The results are guaranteed, because the electric current that’s used completely kills the hair follicle.

Laser Hair Removal: uses lasers that pinpoint melanin and effectively destroys hair follicles. The dark matter that’s targeted by the laser can be artificially introduced if the patient has lighter hair to insure the procedure works.

Is the Procedure Painful

Electrolysis: Is mildly painful, and tends to cause more physical pain then laser hair removal.

Laser Hair Removal: can cause some irritation but the general consensus is that it is less painful than waxing, (and considerably less painful than electrolysis).

How Many Treatments are Required?

Electrolysis: generally around 20 -25 thirty minute sessions

Laser Hair Removal: 5-10 treatments at ten minutes a pop

Costs

Electrolysis: $60 per visit

Laser Hair Removal: about can vary from $100--$200 depending on what areas are being treated

It must also be noted that electrolysis is currently the only hair removal technique that has been recognized by the FDA as a reliable and permanent solution to excessive hair growth.
