Laser Hair Removal
Shaving and waxing is tedious and ineffective. It doesn’t solve the problem, just puts it off for a while. Are you tired of hair continuously appearing in places you don’t want it to? Take the long-term solution. Laser hair removal can insure that unsightly hair stays gone, and may be your best option.
What Can it Do?
Laser hair removal is an increasingly popular medical procedure that uses laser lights to burn away excess or unwanted hair. The treatment can be used on any part of the body, including upper lip, back, neck, legs, armpits and bikini lines (among others). Hair follicles are burned away to prevent hair from growing back again.
History of Laser Hair Removal
The earliest attempts for removing hair using lasers began in the 1960’s. However, the first lasers designed for this purpose could not generate a fine enough beam of light, and therefore couldn’t be used without damaging surrounding skin tissue. It wasn’t until the late 60’s, when more precise lasers that targeted specific follicles were developed, that major breakthroughs in laser hair removal were made.
In the late 90’s, the FDA finally approved a set of devices that are still used today. These newer lasers work by targeting the melanin in the patients’ hair and destroying the hair follicle with an intense beam of light.
What Type of Hair Can Laser Hair Removal Eliminate?
Unfortunately, laser hair removal is not completely successful on all patients. Tests have frequently shown that the procedure is most effective on people with light skin and dark hair. Recent developments have made it more effective on dark skin too, though not as consistently. Laser hair removal is least effective on patients with light brown, light red, blond or brown hair. Electrolysis is another option if others fail.
Laser Hair Removal Facts
There are a few things to know about the laser hair removal process before making your appointment:
• There will be a slight stinging sensation during and for a short period after receiving the treatment
• You will be required to wear goggles so your eyes are not exposed to the harmful laser lights
• Depending on how much work you are having done, the procedure could last from anywhere between a few minutes to a few hours
• Multiple treatments may be needed to insure long lasting hair removal
Ways to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal
Before you go in for treatment, there are some preparations you can take. You need to know your medical history and be aware of any skin conditions that might negatively affect the procedure. If you don’t communicate these medical conditions to your doctor some temporary side effects such as blistering, hair discoloration/ thinning, and skin lightening may occur. Note: All of these complications are rare if you go with a licensed doctor that’s been certified by the board of dermatology.
Another step you can take before laser hair removal is to avoid tanning and exposure to direct sunlight for about 5 weeks before the procedure. Remember, the lighter your skin is, the higher your chances are for the process being successful.
You are also going to want to avoid plucking or waxing the hair in the area that you are going to be treated for 3 to 4 weeks before the procedure. This is because laser hair removal best targets hairs that are visible, or above the skin. The hairs must be short, however, so it is recommended that you do shave a day or two before going in.

Immediately following your treatment, the area may appear a bit red and swollen. Three to seven days after treatment you may experience what seems to be re-growth of hair. Actually, most of these hairs are being shed as a result of your treatment, and are not re-growing.
