Painless Hair Removal
Women (and some men) have been removing unwanted, excess body hair throughout the ages. This has been done through a myriad of methods, from the primitive method of shaving with a sharpened piece of flint to the most modern laser hair removal techniques.
Methods of Hair Removal
Other forms of hair removal that have been invented and refined during the centuries include tweezing, hair threading, shaving with an electric shaver, creams and depilatories, waxing and sugar waxing, electrolysis. Of these, the use of enzyme-containing creams and depilatories are considered completely painless (unless there is skin sensitivity to the product). Shaving is also considered painless unless the user causes minor nicks or if there is again, sensitivity. Other methods of contemporary procedures that promise painless hair removal include buffing pads imbedded with ‘superfine crystals; devices that ostensibly send a radio frequency wave through the hair, deadening it at the root; ‘automatic’ tweezers and epilators. Certainly, the most modern and effective form of permanent or near-permanent hair removal is laser hair removal.
Laser Hair Removal
Modern laser hair removal methods use instruments that have a cooling tip, which provides a gentle anesthetic property, allowing even sensitive areas of the body to be treated comfortably. Although a slight stinging sensation is felt, most people tolerate the minimal discomfort very well. For those clients who are very sensitive to the procedure, a mild anesthetic may be applied to the skin before the procedure begins. Following laser hair removal sessions, many people experience a sensation like a sunburn in the treated area that may last for a few hours. Cold compresses applied to the skin help alleviate this mild discomfort.
Alleviating Pain from Hair Removal
Tweezing: When tweezing your eyebrows or other body part, be sure to start with a pair of clean, sharp professional pair of tweezers. Tweeze after bathing or showering when your skin is the softest (or place a warm, damp cloth over the area you want to tweeze for about ten minutes). Pull hairs out in the direction of each hair’s growth and use your fingertips to flatten the skin as much as possible so you can remove each hair by its root. When you are finished, apply an astringent to clean the area and close pores. Finish with a light moisturizer to re-hydrate the area.
Salon waxing: If you have a rash on the area that you are contemplating waxing, wait until the rash or sensitivity goes away and do NOT use exfoliators or products that contain alpha hydroxyl for the week preceding your waxing appointment. Let your skin-care technician know in advance, if you have sensitive skin or are prone to break-outs. Consider bringing your own creams from home for use following your waxing since you will know how your skin will react to them. If you experience pain or irritation following your waxing, apply a topical toothache remedy to the area, which will provide a numbing sensation. You may also want to take an anti-inflammatory medication, such as ibuprofen, before your waxing. Some people contend that this helps prevent redness, bumps and pain afterward.
Although there are many different methods of hair removal, some painless, others not so painless, laser hair removal is one of the safest and relatively painless form of permanent hair removal available. FDA-approved, laser hair removal is considered by many experts in the field to be the most effective over-all form of hair removal. Although not covered by health insurance, laser hair removal may still be cost-effective by ending the wasteful, ongoing purchases of other hair-removal products.
